A new version of a picture I drew
last year.
A bit of tasting of the word
revontuli, which is Finnish for aurora borealis, and literally translated
means foxfire.
Yet, foxfire in Finnish is virvatuli, and Virva is a
name.
(Or rather, will-o'-the-wisp is
virvatuli in Finnish, but the two words are often treated as synonyms.
Will-o'-the-wisp is a spontaneous combustion of natural gas emitted by decaying
matter, while foxfire is
the glow of bioluminesent fungus and/or bacteria. Both
manifest as eerie seemingly inexplainable lights in swamps,
and I don't think
there's a separate word for foxfire in Finnish.)
