Raptor repaints, vol. 2
July-December 2019

Based on the characters from my Jurassic Park fanfic, Last Queens of Thieves.
The fanfic itself can be read at AO3, and here's a page on my site of pictures I've drawn of these guys.

Materials:

  • acrylic paint of various brands, no primer

  • soft, round paint brushes in small sizes with synthetic bristles

  • epoxy putty

  • black 0.05 mm marker

  • FireAlpaca and PaintShopPro for the photomanip ones

Survivor, Dare, Dash-and-slash/Dash, and Squeak

I didn't alter these figures, the edits in the pictures are photomanipulation.
Since the four of them are still technically of the original JP generation, I thought it would
be fitting to have them represented by the original Kenner raptor figures from the 90's.

  • changed Survivor's eye colour from green to yellow, like her eyes seem to be when she hatches and how I've drawn them when she's older, too
  • made slight edits to their markings: gave Dare a dark chin and Dash a light snout, and surrounded Dare's eyes with his base colour instead of black
  • added scars on Squeak, and shaped her left shin to be slightly bent with a less defined calf muscle, as a result of her old injury

:)

Shredder and Grappleclaws

Two of the Legacy Collection jumping raptors already looked a lot like how I picture these siblings.
Grappleclaws' design is based on the tribe C raptors from Jurassic Park: Trespasser, which I'm
treating as just a colour morph rather than its own subspecies. He's a very pretty boy, if I do say so myself.
Shredder looks more like their mother, but with different colour eyes, and also both of Shredder's are still uninjured.

  • on both: added stripes, as the figures originally mostly had patterns just along the back and halfway down the tail; painted scutes; matched the dark around the eyes to the stripe colour; and painted finger claws and dewclaws (the three biggest toeclaws were already painted)
  • continued Shredder's underbelly colour up her neck and onto her jaw
  • changed Grappleclaws' face, legs, and sides mostly to yellow from orange and white, also added a broad stripe of redder orange lengthwise along each flank and some yellow on his arms
  • repainted Grappleclaws' eyes to change their colour from yellow to red and pink with a thin yellow line around the pupil

Whirlwind

Fujimi mostly makes vehicle models, but they recently made a T. rex and
a retroraptor one, and I wanted to try the latter, Whirlwind's figure being the result.
Her markings are based on the tribe B raptors from Trespasser, just in shades of brown because she's female.

  • assembled the snap-fit model as best I could
  • used epoxy putty to fully close seams at the top of the head, underside of the torso, on lower back, and where the neck attaches to the torso (I actually just couldn't get that joint to attach otherwise)
  • also shaped the underside of the torso a bit with the putty, to make it less concave
  • sculpted a replacement with the putty for one dewclaw I couldn't attach
  • fully painted except for teeth, tongue, the tissue at the inside of the corners of the mouth, and claws (other than the sculpted dewclaw)

Triptail

She was a Papo raptor figure, of which I think there already exists a brown one, but the green
one was what I was able to find. And it was more fun to paint onto her the exact patterns I want.

  • full repaint, except for claws and inside of the mouth (though I made some touch-ups to both)

Elusive and Finder

Both of them were orange Attack Pack raptors. Just regular tigerstripe boys, these two.
(The little Dilo they've tracked down has also been repainted a little.)

  • on both: added a white underbelly and black stripes, painted claws and scutes, and touched up where the eyes' factory paint was badly placed or chipped
  • changed Elusive's eyes from yellow to green

Swift's brood group shot

Also, babies!

This generation's descendants; children, grandchildren, or both. I don't have names for them for now.
Update: I do now.

Tumult (biggest kid)

Was a Blue soda cup topper from the JWFK version of the set.

  • fully repainted except for eyes, most of the claws, and some of the inside of the mouth
  • removed middle toes that incorrectly didn't have sickle claws on them, and sculpted new ones with epoxy putty

Ruckus (middle child)

Was a Blue mini figure, the kind that comes with a mini vehicle.

  • full repaint
  • I drew the pupils with marker instead of acrylic for this one, seems to work just as fine, at least if the surface of the eye is already painted

Daydreamer (tiny baby)

I didn't paint this one, but aren't they cute!
A TLW diecast mini figure also from the 90's, here to attend the photoshoot with the rest of the family.

More before&after and in-progress shots and explanations
about the work process can be found in this tag on my blog.
