Expecting a storm
September - October 2022

My babies are having babies of their own! :')

As for the question I've been getting a lot since I had these two ladies start courting, about which one of them will lay the eggs - turns out both of them did. Skye doesn't have a biological father, so, unsurprisingly, she doesn't need one for her own offspring, either, but monitor lizards and dinosaurs that have had their genome gaps patched with monitor lizard DNA don't have a monopoly on facultative parthenogenesis. One group of modern animals that has also been observed to be capable of it is birds, and perhaps that also applies to some of their prehistoric relatives. Life can find a whole bunch of ways.

Skye laid one egg, and Tumult laid another, resulting in their clutch of two. As far as the raptors are concerned, both moms are both chicks' biological parents, as they have no reason to assume otherwise, but even if they knew that each only inherited genes from one parent, they are all a family. Or will be, once the little ones hatch.

Their nest is quite a bit bigger than would be required of a JP/W Velociraptor nest, and their packmates have helped them build and maintain it. Their future children's grandparents will also occasionally have an incubation shift to help them out, and that (along with Skye having watched her parents build a nest this big when incubating her little siblings, and having learned by example) has resulted in a nest comfy for raptors of all sizes.

All is peaceful for now. Perhaps the calm before a storm in more ways than one.
